Students Need to Job Hunt While in College

The days of graduate and then find a job are gone. In fact, most students who wait until they graduate to find a job have waited too long, because although the job scene is improving, too many graduates aren’t finding work. Today’s college students need to work towards finding a job the entire time they are in college.

At one time, a company typically hired a college graduate straight out of college in areas such as engineering. Now many companies outsource jobs that only require a standard degree. To compete, today’s college student will find more success with a specialized degree or cross training. For example, a company who needs an engineer to work in a marketing capacity will quickly hire an engineer who has taken marketing classes prior to graduating, over other graduated engineers.

The student who targets his or her degree early can work towards landing a job long before graduation. To accomplish that, a student must first decide just what job he or she wants. Good resources include job and internship fairs. Professional organizations and conferences can also expose the student to more ideas and opportunities.

Once the student targets a specific job, the student should find someone working at the same kind of job and do an informational interview to learn more about the specifics of the work. The next step is to find a viable company. Even if the company doesn’t have internships, a student can make contacts early (networking) and target his or her education towards that company’s needs.

Peggy Swager worked for a recruiting firm and now lectures on job hunting and resume writing.
